Για την ιστορία

Terrorizing the Opposition in north Cyprus under the Shadow of Annan Plan Annan plan is still on the table. We are watching disingenuous efforts from the leaderships of both sides, Turkey, Greece, UN , EU, USA and others to "improve" it. At every step, it seems to be getting worse. But the opposition in north Cyprus is still clinging on their hope to reach the referendum stage and gather a "yes" vote. Whether this is good for Cyprus or not is a different matter than my topic today. I want to stress how the opposition is being terrorized in a somewhat increasing fashion and the patterns are similar to the events in the past. By the way, I still include CTP/RTP and its proxies in the opposition since the events since the December elections clearly show that being in the government did not put them in power. The shift in their rhetoric, that has been shifting rapidly towards the nationalist-front, has accelerated since then but still the organs of the "government" act independent of them and therefore, they deserve this title.

Let's look back at early 90's when the Ghali Set of Ideas was on the table. Although, it is not comparable to the conditions surrounding the Annan Plan , that period was a period of rising optimism in both sides. It also coincided with the increased activity of the so-called "deep-state" (state related paramilitary, terrorist, neo-fascist actions) with in the Republic of Turkey. Its reflection in Cyprus was a wave of bombings, shootings, formation and strengthening of Gray-Wolves related associations, their strong appearance in events in the Green line which lead to lynching of a Greek Cypriot and finally the murder of Kutlu Adali. I am convinced that these actions (documented in details on http://www.cyprusaction.org/humanrights/) may have been part of an effort to prepare for the inevitable clash of the pro-EU, pro-modernization forces and conservative (not in traditional sense, here it includes many leftist organizations as well as centrist to extreme right-wing ones), militarist forces. Late 90's were a period of consolidation of the latter groups in Turkey where they were on the rise and perhaps, can explain the relatively quiet period in Cyprus too.
However, with rapid progress of Republic of Cyprus to EU entry and rise of an alternative political force in Turkey which belonged to the pro-EU camp stirred things up. During the period leading to the Annan plan and since the introduction of the plan, we begun observing an increase in government oppression on journalists, newspapers and trade-unions. The more the "pro-unification" voice was heard, the more active the terrorizing forces became. Afrika/Avrupa newspaper building was bombed several times. Arson became a new tool and was used against columnists, political parties, newspapers, trade-unionists. Two notable bombings took place, one in front of Eroglu's residence - the official residence of the prime-minister and another recent one in front of Talat's (the present prime-minister) residence. Increasingly, Gray-Wolves begun holding rallies and demonstrations during one such demonstration a journalist/activist was beaten. Volkan newspaper replaced Kibrisli (which is now "pro-Annan-plan") in voicing their threats with columnists outlining their dreams on how to torture activists, warning activists against dire consequences and telling them about the day when the "popular" forces of the nationalist front would rise and slap them in the face. Ulusal Halk Hareketi (National People's Movement) was also formed with many famous paramilitary, deep-state related figures in the front lines.

What is very significant about these events is that even after CTP won the elections and formed a government, it could not control them. Talat's house was bombed after he was a prime-minister. Today (March 27th, 2004), Gray-Wolves harassed and attacked a bi-communal festival celebrating the World-Theater day. Last week, reportedly (the reports are weak and confusing) a Turkish Cypriot journalist who worked for Greek Cypriot television was detained for a short period arbitrarily. Arson attempts on political parties are still taking place. One could either assume that by coming to power CTP conformed with those groups or accept to see the bitter truth that the bulk of the opposition refused to believe, i.e. that winning the elections did not mean holding onto the power and controlling the state. These type of affairs are not even under the control of the elected government in Turkey, how could the feeble , puppet-state in north Cyprus control them?

All this is happening under the shadow of the Annan plan and the bulk of the opposition is looking forward to the referendum where under these terrorizing conditions they will try to secure a "yes" vote. We should not forget this when participating in the solution process and when analyzing the past and future events. We need to use the positive support from the international community to pressure these groups who have formed their infra-structure in north Cyprus under the supervision of elements in Turkey and are preparing to use all in their power to spoil the move of Cyprus towards "re-unification" - with the Annan plan or without.
